The
Hebrew writer shared how Christians who are in need of the “milk”
of God's word are “unskillful in the word of
righteousness” because they
are “babes” in
their walk with Him. In chapter five and verse fourteen of
Hebrews we see how “strong meat belongs to them that are of full
age” where we read:
But strong
meat belongs to them that are of full age,
even
those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern
both good and evil.
The
verse begins, “But strong meat belongs to them that are
of full age, ” The writer
began with the words, “But”
which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was previously stated “strong
meat” or “firm, immovable,
solid, hard, rigid and steadfast rations, food and nourishment”
“belongs to them that are”
which is one Greek word “esti” and means “comes, consists,
profits and remains” “of full age”
which means “brought to its end, finished, wanting nothing
necessary to completeness and perfect”. The “solid and steadfast”
portion of God's word “comes to” those who are mature in their
Christian walk.
The
verse goes on to say, “even
those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern
both good and evil.”. The
writer continued, “even those who by
reason”
which means “the ones who throughout, during and on account and
because” “of use”
or “by habit whether of body or mind which is acquired by custom
and practice” “have their senses”
which means “hold, owns and possesses a faculty of the mind for
perceiving, understanding and judging” “exercised”
or “vigorously trained in any way either with the body or the mind”
“to discern”
which means “to disputation and judging” “both
good” or
“honest, meet and goodly” “and
evil” which
refers to “harm, wicked, bad, noisome and ill”. Those who have
matured in their faith discern “good
and evil”
because they “vigorously train” in the “strong
meat” of
God's word.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we understand the importance
of “vigorously training” in the word of God. We must read it,
study it, meditate upon it and memorize it daily. The more we are
exposed to God's word, the easier it is for us to know what is “good”
and what is “evil”. Let us purpose to hear the words of
the Hebrew writer and follow his challenge to be “of full age”
and prepared to to fulfill God's perfect plan for our lives.
Next
time we
begin a new chapter and see the Hebrew writer share about “leaving
the principles of the doctrine of Christ”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
