The
writer of Hebrews declared “without all contradiction the
less is blessed of the better”
as he referred to “Abraham”
paying “tithes” to
“Melchisedec”and
in chapter seven and verse eight of Hebrews the writer shared
how, “men that die receive tithes” where we read:
of whom
it is witnessed that he lives.
The
verse begins, “And here men that die
receive tithes; but there he receives
them,...”. The
writer began with the words, “And
here”
which means “hither and in this place”, “men
that die”
or “male human beings who are slain or breathe their last”
“receive”
which means “even, also and indeed take with the hand, lay hold of,
claim and procure” “tithes”
which refers to “ten percent”; “but”
which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was just stated “there
he” which
refers to “Melchisedec or Jesus”
“receives”
or “takes with the hand, lays hold of, claims and procures”
“them”
which refers to “the tithes”.
The
verse continues, “...of whom it is witnessed that he
lives.”. The writer added the
words, “of whom it is witnessed”
which means “by these it is affirmed, known by revelation and given
by testimony” “that he lives” or
“that Melchisedec is
alive”. Though the “priests”
in this world eventually die, Jesus Christ has the “testimony” of
others that He is alive.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we understand the
“mortality” of men and the “immortality” of Jesus Christ.
Once again the writer shared concerning the superiority of Jesus over
men who “receive tithes”. Those who gave “ten percent”
to the “priests” of Levi were assured that those “priests”
who “received” them would eventually “die”, however,
those who gave testimony of Jesus know He is eternal. Though Jesus
died when He was on earth, He was raised again from the grave and
lives forevermore to be the “Lord and Savior” for all who believe
in Him.
Next
time the writer shares how “Levi,
who receives tithes, paid tithes”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
