The
writer of Hebrews shared how Jesus did not need to “offer
up sacrifice”
on a daily basis, “first, for his own
sins, and then for the people's”
because He did that “once, when he
offered up himself”
. In chapter seven and verse twenty-eight
of Hebrews the writer shares how Jesus is
“consecrated for evermore” where we read:
For the
law makes men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the
oath, which was since the law, makes the Son, who is
consecrated for evermore.
The
verse begins, “For the law makes men
high priests which have infirmity;”. The
writer began with the words, “For the
law” which
means “even as, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, verily and therefore
the rule producing a state approved of God”, “makes
men” or
“sets, puts, places and appoints human beings whether male or
female” “high priests”
which means “the chief or priests” “which
have infirmity”
which means “want of strength, weakness, feebleness and frailty”.
The “law of God” concerning the priests was applied to men who
were “weak, feeble and frail”.
The
verse goes on to say, “but the word
of the oath, which was since the law, makes
the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.”. The
writer continued with the word, “but”
which is a
disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be written
takes precedence over what was just stated “the
word” or
“speech, utterance, decree or mandate” “of
the oath”
which means “according to the affirmation and asseveration”,
“which was since”
or “was after, against and behind” “the
law” which
means “the rule producing a state approved of God”, “makes
the Son”
or “makes Jesus”, “who is
consecrated” which
means “who is perfect, complete, accomplished and finished” “for
evermore”
or “to an unbroken age, perpetuity of time and eternity”. In
contrast to the effect of “the law of God”, the “oath of God”,
which was provided after the law came, made provision for Jesus
Christ to be “perfect and complete” for all eternity.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we see the preeminence of “God's
oath” over “the law for the priests”. “God's oath” made a
provision for Jesus to be the “complete, perfect and eternal”
priest for all of mankind. There is no longer a reason for the
“incomplete and imperfect” “priesthood” because Jesus
offered all that was necessary to have access to God. Those who read
these words should rejoice as they have discovered all that is needed
for our salvation.
Next
time we begin a new chapter and see the writer share how Jesus is
“set on
the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
