The
writer of Hebrews showed how the “second covenant” of
God was “not according to the covenant that” He
“made with their fathers”,
and in chapter eight and verse ten of Hebrews, the writer
shares how God declared “this is the covenant I will make”
where we read:
For this
is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind,
and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they
shall be to me a people:
The
verse begins, “For this is
the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those
days, says the Lord;”. The
writer began with the word, “For”
which means “even as, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, verily and
therefore” “this is the covenant”
or “this is the disposition, arrangement, compact or testament”
“that I will make”
which means “that God would furnish, produce, fulfill, arrange and
dispose of by will” “with the
house” or
“the habitation and dwelling place” “of
Israel” which
means “he shall be a prince of God” and was “the name given to
the patriarch Jacob and his descendants” “after
those days”
which means “among, afterwards and behind the days in general”,
“says”
or “speaks, affirms and maintains” “the
Lord” which
refers to “he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has
power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”.
God was to declare what His “new
covenant”
would be like for the “house of
Israel”
when He issued it.
The
verse continues, “I will put my laws
into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to
them a God, and they shall be to me a people:”. The
writer added the words, “I will put”
or “God
will grant, bestow, supply, furnish and deliver over” “my
laws”
which means “God's rule producing a state approved of God” “into
their minds”
or “the people's understanding, feelings an desires”, “and
write them”
which means “inscribe the laws” “in
their hearts”
or “in the people's
centre of all physical and spiritual life ”:
“and I will be”
which means “God shall follow up with and come to pass” “to
them”
which refers to “to the people” “a
God” which
refers to “the Godhead bodily or trinity which is comprised of God
the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “and
they shall be”
or “the people shall follow up and come to pass” “to
me” which
refers to God “a people” or
“group, tribe, nation as well as all those who are of the same
stock and language”. Rather than the “law
of God”
being written on tablets of stone, God would now “put”
His “laws
into their minds”
and “write them in their hearts”.
This caused the relationship between people and God to be in its
proper position.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we see how God desired to
have a relationship with people even when they did not and could not
keep His “first covenant” with them. God supplied a “new
covenant” with people that would be based upon His Son Jesus
keeping the law, and now people may have a relationship with God
simply by believing in, relying upon, trusting in and clinging to
Jesus Christ. God's law is now “written” upon the “hearts”
and “minds” of people, and unless they harden their
“hearts” against the Lord, they know what He desires from
them. Let us rejoice in the provision of the “new covenant”
God has offered to all who shall receive.
Next
time the writer tells his readers “they
shall not teach every man his neighbor”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
