The
Hebrew writer shared when the “showers” come upon the earth, it
“drinks in the rain”
and produces both “herbs”
or “green growing plants” and “bramble bushes and briers”.
The “green growing plants are a “blessing from God”,
but the “bramble bushes and briers” are destined to be “cursed
and condemned”. In chapter six and verse nine of Hebrews we
see how the writer of Hebrews was “persuaded better things of”
his readers where we
read:
But,
beloved, we are persuaded better things of you,
and things
that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.
The
verse begins, “But, beloved, we are persuaded better
things of you,...” The writer
began with the word, “But”
which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was previously stated”,
“beloved” which
refers to “esteemed, dear, favorite and worthy of love ones” “we
are persuaded” which means
“the Hebrew writer and his companions have confidence in, believe
in and trust” “better things”
which means “more useful, serviceable, advantageous and excellent
things” “of you”
which refers to the readers of the book of Hebrews. The writer of
Hebrews knew and expected that his readers were far beyond the
“infantile” behavior of “babes”
in the “milk” of
God's word and to be as “bramble and briers” instead of “green
fruit bearing herbs”.
The
verse goes on to say, “...and things that accompany
salvation, though we thus speak.”. The
writer continued, “and things that accompany”
or “things which hold in the hand in the sense of wearing, possess
in the mind, comprise, involve, own and are joined to” “salvation”
which means “deliverance, preservation and safety”, “though
we thus speak” or “even, if
and although we even so, in this manner, and likewise utter, declare
and proclaim”. The writer was also convinced they were involved in
the doctrines that “are joined to” “salvation”,
and for this reason the he would continue to “declare, utter and
proclaim” to them.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we understand the confidence
the Hebrew writer had of his readers. He desired for them to grown
into maturity in the faith, and he was “persuaded” they would
proceed accordingly. Jesus Christ desires for us to know Him, drink
in of His word and learn to function in this world according to His
standards and not those of the world. “Salvation” is the
beginning of the relationship with God, and then we go on to greater
and closer principles within the Kingdom of God. May we be as those
whom the Hebrew writer had confidence and was inspired, and may we be
among those in whom he was “persuaded” of “better
things”.
Next
time the writer shares
how God “is not unrighteous
to forget your work and labor”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
