The
writer of Hebrews shared about “the forerunner, even
Jesus”, who was “made
an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec”,
and in chapter seven and verse one of Hebrews the writer
shares more about this one called, “Melchisedec, King of Salem”
where we read:
For this
Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God,
who met
Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;
The
verse begins, “For this Melchisedec, king of Salem,
priest of the most high God,...”. The
writer began with the words, “For this Melchisedec”
which means “king of righteousness”, “king of Salem”
which means “leader, commander and lord of the land of peace which
was in Palestine” and was “priest”
or “the one who offers sacrifices and is in general busied with
sacred rites” “of the most high”
which means “the highest and Supreme” “God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit. “Melchisedec”
was not only a “king”,
but also a “priest” of
the “highest and Supreme” God.
The
verse continues, “who met Abraham returning from the
slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;”. The
writer added the words, “who met” or
“who befell, happened and occurred ” “Abraham”
which means “father of a multitude” and was “the son of Terah
and the founder of the Jewish nation” “returning from”
or “turning and coming back again from” “the
slaughter” which refers to
“the act of cutting into pieces” “of the kings”
or “leaders of the people, princes, commanders and lords of the
land”, “and blessed him”
which means “praised, celebrated, invoked blessings upon and
pronounced a consecratory blessing upon “Melchisedec”.
In the book of Genesis chapter fourteen and verses eighteen and
nineteen we read where “Melchisedec”
met Abraham after he defeated the armies who conquered “Sodom
and Gomorrah” and captured his
nephew Lot and his family.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we see how “Melchisedec”
differed from the Levitical priesthood. Not only was he a “priest”
of “the most high God”, but he was a “king” as
well. Jesus Christ is known as our “king and priest”, and
He holds the positions of our “spiritual and royal” leader. No
one else held these offices simultaneously, and this is why Jesus is
the perfect one to intercede on behalf of our sin. Let us thank the
Lord for the blessing of our great “King of Kings” and “Priest
of Priests” - Jesus Christ.
Next
time the writer shares how “Abraham
gave a tenth part of all” to
“Melchisedec, the King of
Righteousness”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
