The
writer of Hebrews declared how God “by two immutable
things, in that it was impossible for God to lie”
so that “we might have a strong consolation, who have
fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us”.
In chapter six and verse nineteen of Hebrews the writer
referred to God's promise as, “an anchor of the soul”
where we read:
and which
enters into that within the veil;
The
verse begins, “Which hope
we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast,...”. The
writer began with the words, “Which
hope we have”
which means “that the Hebrew writer and his readers hold, possess,
keep and own” “an anchor”
or “a stay or safeguard” “of the
soul”
which means “the seat of the feelings, desires, affections and
aversions”, “both sure”
which means “not only certain and safe” “and
steadfast”
but also “stable, fast, firm, sure and trusty”. The fact that God
keeps His “promises”
becomes as a “stay and safeguard” to our
“souls”,
and we may know it as “stable, firm and trustworthy”.
The
verse goes on to say, “...and which enters into that
within the veil;”. The writer
continued, “and which enters” or
“and the thing that comes in, makes entrance and is the state of
things” “into that within”
which means “in the inner space, interior, shrine and Holy of
Holies” “the veil”
or “the name given to the two curtains in the temple at Jerusalem,
one of them at the entrance to the temple separated the Holy Place
from the outer court, the other veiled the Holy of Holies from the
Holy Place”. Because God keeps His promises, it becomes the
righteousness and holiness that was necessary to “enter into” the
“Holy of Holies” to intercede on our behalf.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we understand the importance
of God keeping His word. Because He gave us “two immutable
things”, His “counsel” and His “oath”, He
was able through Jesus Christ to enter into the “Holy of Holies”
on our behalf and make intercession for our sins. Like “an
anchor” of a ship that holds fast to the ocean floor, we may
depend upon this “sure and certain” “stay and safeguard” of
our “souls”. Jesus was the ultimate fulfillment of the “promise”
of God, and with great certainty, we may depend upon Him for
salvation and access to the throne of grace.
Next
time the writer tells about how “the
forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
