he
writer of Hebrews shared how “Abraham” gave “tithes” to
“Melchisedec” after he defeated the foes of Sodom and Gomorrah.
In chapter seven and verse three of Hebrews the writer shares
more about, “Melchisedec, King of Salem” where we read:
Without
father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of
days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a
priest continually.
The
verse begins, “Without father, without mother, without
descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life;...”.
The writer began with the words,
“without father”
which means “fatherless or whose father is not recorded in the
genealogies”, “without mother”
or “bereft of a mother or born of a base or unknown mother”,
“without descent”
which means “one of whose genealogy there is no record”, “having
neither” or “holding,
possessing or owning no” “beginning”
which means “origin, active cause or extremity” “of
days” or “time in general or
days of his life”, “nor end of life”
which refers to “the termination, cessation or finishing of the
state of one who is possessed of vitality or is animated”. There is
no record of “Melchisedec's”
birth parents, genealogy or death.
The
verse continues, “but made like unto the Son of God;
abides a priest continually.”. The
writer added the word, “but” which
is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was just stated” “made
like” or “fashioned and
formed as a similar model, copy, facsimile or rendering” “unto
the Son” which means “the
descendant and one of the posterity” “of God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”; “abides”
or “remains, continues, endures and waits as” “a
priest” which means “one who
offers sacrifices and in general in busied with sacred rites”
“continually” or
“perpetually and forever”. Though there was no record of
“Melchisedec” he
was “made” like
“God's Son”, and
His “priesthood” lasts forever.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we see the mystery behind the
appearance of “Melchisedec” who had no heritage recorded.
This “theophany” or early appearance of Jesus was outside the
“temporary” “order of priests” who eventually died.
Jesus “lives” “eternally” and is therefore greater than the
Levitical priesthood. He was born to die for our sins, but conquered
death that we may have a personal relationship with God. Let us
realize the magnitude and position of our “great high priest”
who was made according to the “order of Melchisedec”.
Next
time the writer tells his readers to “consider
how great this man was”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
