The
Hebrew writer shared how “men verily
swear by the greater”,
and with “an oath for confirmation is
to them an end of all strife”.
In chapter six and verse seventeen of
Hebrews the writer referenced God's “heirs
of promise” as he wrote how He “confirmed”
His
promise“by an oath”
where we read:
Wherein
God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise
the
immutability of his counsel, confirmed it
by an oath:
The
verse begins, “Wherein God, willing
more abundantly to show unto the heirs of promise...”. The
writer began with the words, “Wherein
God” which
means “Within this same idea the Godhead bodily and trinity which
is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”,
“willing”
or “minded, intended, disposed, with purpose and deliberate”
“more abundantly”
which means “exceeding some number, measure, rank or need; that
with is superadded and more than necessary” “to
show” or
“exhibit, bring forth to view, prove, demonstrate and acknowledge”
“unto the heirs”
which refers to “the ones who have acquired or obtained the portion
allotted to them” “of promise”
which means “announcement, information, assent or pledge especially
a divine assurance of good”. Men
“swore” by
someone or something “greater”
as proof to their vow, and God demonstrated His personal resolve and
purpose as well.
The
verse continues, “...the immutability
of his counsel, confirmed it
by an oath:”. The
writer added the words, “the
immutability” or
“not transposed, transferred, fixed, unaltered and unchangeability”
“of his counsel”
which means “of God's purpose, volition, advice and will”,
“confirmed it”
or “acted as a mediator between litigating or covenanting parties”
“by an oath”
which means “that which has been pledged or promised”. God, who
cannot be “changed or altered”, “confirmed”
His word by a “pledge or promise” to keep it.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we understand when God make a
promise, He keeps His word. Though the idea of “swearing”
is manifested among people, God allowed Himself to be put under the
same mode of promise. He gave His unchangeable “volition and will”,
and He became as a “mediator” between “litigating parties”.
This is why Jesus was sent. He became our “mediator”, and now the
“promise” of “salvation” from God shall never be
altered.
Next
time the writer shares how it is “impossible
for God to lie”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
