The
Hebrew writer began to share how it is “impossible
for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly
gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost”,
and in chapter six and verse five of
Hebrews he includes those who “have tasted
the good word of God” where we read:
And have
tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
The
verse begins, “And have tasted the
good word of God,...” The
writer began with the words, “And
have tasted”
which means “tried the flavor of, partaken and enjoyed” “the
good word”
or “the honest, better and goodly utterance, saying, spoken and
command” “of God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Those who
were “once enlightened” also
“partook and enjoyed” God's “good
word”.
The
verse goes on to say, “and the powers
of the world to come”. The
writer continued, “and the powers”
which means
“the strength, ability and influence” “of
the world”
or “the unbroken age, perpetuity of time and eternity” “to
come”
which means “to be about, intend, think to and have in mind”.
These “enlightened”
ones also knew about the “strengths and influences” of future
“time and eternity”.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we note additional ideas with
which these “enlightened” were familiar. They knew “God's
good word”, and they knew of “eternal” powers that
promised for the future as well. There is no doubt these were
actually “believers in Jesus Christ”, and the writer of Hebrews
believed it necessary to identify them as such. We should ask
ourselves, “have we tasted the good word of God”? Do we
know about “the powers of the world to come”? Lest we be
placed within the group of the “impossible” let us examine
ourselves in these important doctrines.
Next
time the writer shares what happens,
“if they
shall fall away”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
