People
“who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the
heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have
tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,”
were warned of an “impossibility” by the writer of Hebrews,
and in chapter six and verse six of Hebrews we discover it is “to
renew them again unto repentance” where we read:
If they
shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance;
seeing
they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him
to an open shame.
The
verse begins, “If they shall fall away, to renew them
again unto repentance;” The
writer began with the words, “If they shall fall away”
which means “even, likewise and also to fall beside a person or
slip aside a thing”, “to renew”
or “renovate and restore” “them again”
which means “these who have fallen away anew, furthermore or on the
other hand” “unto repentance”
or “to a change of mind, reversal of a purpose they have formed or
of something they have done”. The Hebrew writer stated that is
would be “impossible” to
“renew” people to
“repentance” who
have fell away from faith and trust in God through Jesus Christ.
The
verse goes on to say, “seeing they crucify to themselves
the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame”. The
writer continued, “seeing they crucify”
or “since and on account that they raise up the cross”
“to themselves” which refers
to “” “the Son”
or “the offspring, descendant and posterity of one” “of
God” which refers to “the
Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father,
Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “afresh”
which means “to re-crucify”, “and put him to an open
shame” which means “to make
a public and open example and disgrace”. Those who forsake the
“gospel” of Jesus Christ have in effect “crucified” Him anew
which makes Him a “public and open example of disgrace”.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we understand how ominous
they are for those who have “fallen away”
from faith and trust in Jesus. “It is impossible...to renew
them again unto repentance;” are words we never want to hear about
ourselves. We must continue in our relationship with God through His
Son Jesus Christ and not forsake them. The fact that we see this
warning from the writer of Hebrews demonstrates his desire to keep us
from apostasy, and if we are wise, we shall not only listen to him,
but also be obedient to his admonition.
Next
time we see
the writer share about “the
earth which drinks in the rain”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
