Hard Things To Say to the Dull of Hearing Hebrews 5:11

The Hebrew writer shared how Jesus was “called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec” , and in chapter five and verse eleven of Hebrews the writer declares he has “many things to say, and hard to be uttered” to the “dull of hearing” where we read:

Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing you are dull of hearing.

The verse begins, “Of whom we have many things to say,...” The writer began with the words, “Of whom” which means “about, concerning, on account of and because of Jesus our great high priest” “we have many things” or “the writer has a lot, plenteous and a great amount” “to say” which means “to utter, proclaim or declare”. The writer of Hebrews had “many things” to share about Jesus with his readers.

The verse continues, “ ...and hard to be uttered, seeing you are dull of hearing”. The writer added, “and hard” which means “difficult to interpret or explain” “to be uttered” or “spoken, called and told”, “seeing you are” which means “since, because and otherwise” “dull” or “slow, sluggish, indolent and languid” “of hearing” which means “giving audience and the sense of a thing heard”. Though he had “many things” to share with his readers, the writer of Hebrews felt he couldn't because they were “slow and indolent” to giving audience to and obey his words.

When we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we understand how the writer knew “many things” about Jesus he wanted to share. This “great high priest” Jesus was so far superior to anyone who served in that role before, and the writer's desire to share about Him wasn't completely satisfied because his readers were “dull of hearing”. God the Father wants us to know His Son and “great high priest”, and the question we should ask of ourselves is, “Am I so dull of hearing” that I will not give audience to all He desires to share?

Next time the writer of Hebrews challenges his readers with this idea, “when for the time you ought to be teachers, you have need that one teach you again”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
