The
writer of Hebrews shared how the Levitical “priests”
were made so without “an oath”
concerning them, however, Jesus was “made a priest after
the order of Melchisedec” by
His own “oath”,
and in chapter seven and verse twenty-two of Hebrews the
writer tells how “Jesus made a surety of a better testament”
where we read:
By so much
was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.
The
verse begins, “By so much was Jesus made...”. The
writer began with the words, “By so much”
which means “down from, throughout, according to and toward
greater, larger and many things”, “was Jesus”
or “was Jehovah is Salvation come into, preferred, arisen and
become”. The writer's reference was to how “Jesus”
arose and became what he is about to declare.
The
verse goes on to say, “...a surety of a better
testament”. The writer
continued with the words, “a surety” or
“a sponsor, bondsman and pledge” “of a better”
which means “a more useful, serviceable, advantageous and
excellent” “testament”
or “disposition or arrangement of any sort which one wishes to be
valid or the last disposition which one makes of his earthly
possessions after his death such as a will”. When Jesus became the
“perfect great high priest”,
He brought in to effect a more excellent “disposition and
arrangement” with God.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we see how Jesus produced a
greater “testament” than had ever been brought about
before. His “pledge” ensured that man could have a relationship
with God that was based upon what He sacrificed rather than the
“imperfect” sacrifices from the “priests” from the
tribe of “Levi”. Jesus is the answer for the gap between
God and man, and because He gave Himself as the “perfect”
offering for our sins, we now have a “sure testament” that
allows us to relate to God.
Next
time the writer shares how the previous “priests”
“were not suffered to
continue by reason of death”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
