Mark wrote after Jesus and His disciples, “sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. And Jesus said unto them, All of you shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twenty-nine of his book, Mark shared how Peter said, “Although all shall be offended, yet will not I”, where we read:
But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.
The verse reads, “But Peter said unto him, ...” Mark began with the words, “But Peter” which means “however, nonetheless, moreover and Peter whose name means little rock or stone and was one of Jesus' disciples” “said unto him” or “uttered, proclaimed and declared to Jesus” the following words. Mark shared how Peter began to speak to Jesus concerning His statement about being resurrected and preceding them to Galilee.
The verse continues, “... Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.” Mark added the words, “Although all” which means “even and indeed each, every, the whole and everyone of the other disciples” “shall be offended” or “will be stumbled, caused to fall away and enticed to sin”, “yet will not I” which means “Peter would not be offended or stumbled by Jesus”. Mark shared how Peter resisted Jesus' statement about all the disciples being “offended” on His account because Peter did not think he would be “stumbled” at all by the Lord.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Peter exalted himself above the other disciples of Jesus in this statement. “Although all” which refers to “everyone of” the other disciples would be “caused to fall” by what happens to Jesus, Peter thought he would not. We will see that he is, but at this point, Peter believed himself to be something other than what he was. “There is none righteous, no, not one” according to Paul the apostle in Romans chapter three and verse ten, and though a person may think themselves a little better than anyone else, they are just as in need of a relationship with Jesus as every other person. In other words, we all need Jesus, and though people compare themselves to others, no one is “righteous” and to have a relationship with God the Father, they must yield themselves to Jesus His Son. Let all who read these words understand and believe.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, you shall deny me twice”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
