The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are you poor: for yours is the kingdom of God”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “blessed are you that hunger now” and “you that weep now” where we read:
Blessed are you that hunger now: for you shall be filled.
Blessed are you that weep now: for you shall laugh.
The verse reads, “Blessed are you that hunger now: for you shall be filled.” Luke began with the words, “Blessed” or “oh how happy” “are you that hunger now” which means “are the people at this present moment and time who suffer, crave, seek with eager desire and want”: “for you” or “because, since and on account that those who hunger at this time” “shall be filled” which means “will be fed, satisfied, gorged and supplied abundantly with food”. Luke shared how Jesus declared people who are in “want and need with eager desire” are considered “oh how happy” because they will be “satisfied”.
The verse continues, “Blessed are you that weep now: for you shall laugh. ” Luke added the words, “Blessed” which means “oh how happy” “are you that weep now” or “are the people who mourn, lament and bewail at this time and moment”: “for you” which means “because, since and on account that those who weep at this time” “shall laugh” or “will laugh as a sign of joy or satisfaction”. Luke shared how Jesus declared people “oh how happy” who “mourn and lament currently” because they will be “laughing” from joy and satisfaction.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn two other states of people whom Jesus said would be “oh how happy” or “blessed” because of their conditions. People who “hunger or crave” will be “satisfied and supplied abundantly”, and people who “mourn” will “laugh for joy” and be “oh how happy” as well. Jesus knew human conditions. He knew there are people who “hunger” not only for physical nourishment, but also for emotional and spiritual needs as well. Jesus knew people face circumstances that make them “mourn and lament”, but He promised they would be “oh how happy” because they would “laugh for joy” at a later time. God loves people, and although many people encounter conditions that make them “hungry” or “mournful”, having a relationship with His Son Jesus will bring them “satisfaction” for whatever they need. Physical life does not go on forever, but the spiritual life will go on eternally. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (See Psalm 30:5)
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “Blessed are you, when men shall hate you” and “reproach you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
