The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus, “came down with” His twelve disciples, “and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases, and they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all”, and in chapter six and verse twenty of his book Luke shares how Jesus said, “Blessed are you poor” where we read:
And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are you poor:
for yours is the kingdom of God.
The verse reads, “And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are you poor:” Luke began with the words, “and he lifted up his eyes” or “and Jesus raised His physical eyes” “on his disciples” which means “and looked at His students, pupils and attendants”, “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Blessed” which means “oh how happy, fortunate and well off” “are you poor” or “are those who are reduced to beggary, begging, asking alms, destitute of wealth, influence, position and honor”. Luke shared how Jesus looked upon His disciples and declared how “happy and fortunate” people were who were “beggars” and “destitute of influence, position and honor”.
The verse goes on to say, “for yours is the kingdom of God.” Luke continued with the words, “for yours” which means “because, since and on account that to the disciples of Jesus” “is the kingdom” or “is the rule, reign, royal power, kingship and dominion” “of God” which means “belonging to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Luke shared how Jesus proclaimed that “God's Kingdom” belonged to the people who were “poor”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we begin to learn what Jesus taught on the “plain” to His “disciples” who were listening. He told them they were “oh so happy” if they were “poor” in the wealth and honor the world has to offer. People who are “poor” in these areas are in “need, humbled and desire to have”, and those who will be “oh so happy” are in that humble state regardless of what they possess. Jesus desires to have a personal relationship with every person, and He “humbled” Himself to be among people to “save” them from their sins so they may know His Father God. Let all who read these words desire God's Kingdom and know “poverty in spirit” is the first step in gaining His blessings.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “blessed are you that hunger now” and “you that weep now”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
