The beloved physician Luke wrote, “And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do you that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? And Jesus answering them said, Have you not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was hungry, and they which were with him?”, and in chapter six and verse four of his book Luke shares how Jesus continued with the words, “he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the showbread” where we read:
How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the showbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?
The verse reads, “How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the showbread, and gave also to them that were with him;” Luke began with the words, “how he went into the house of God” or “even as and indeed David entered into the dwelling place or tabernacle belonging to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “and did take and eat” which means “and lay hold of and removed to consume and devour” “the showbread” or “the food which was comprised of flour and water which was baked and became loaves consecrated to the Lord”, “and gave also to them that were with him” which means “and granted, bestowed, supplied and furnished the loaves even so and indeed to the men who were with David”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the time when King David entered the “tabernacle of God”, took the consecrated bread and consumed it along with the men who were with him. (See 1 Samuel 21:1-6)
The verse continues, “which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?” Luke added the words, “which is not lawful to eat” which means “that is against the rule and what was known as right” “but for the priests alone” or “except for the ones who offer sacrifices and in general are busied with sacred rites”? Luke shared how Jesus referred to the “rule” or “law” which stated that only the “priests” were to eat of the showbread in the tabernacle. (See Leviticus 24:5-9)
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus continued to reference the scriptures in His answer to the “religious leaders”. Jesus knew the scriptures, and those who are wise should know and observe them as well. God's plan was to “save” mankind from their “sins”, and in the volume of the scriptures His plan is unveiled. God desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they pay particular attention to what He says about “the law”, they will discover their best response is to yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Let all who consider Jesus' words understand what He said to the “religious leaders”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells the Pharisees, “the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
