Luke the beloved physician wrote, “And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do you that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?”, and in chapter six and verse three of his book Luke shares how Jesus asked the Pharisees, “Have you not read so much as this, what David did?” where we read:
And Jesus answering them said, Have you not read so much as this,
what David did, when himself was hungry, and they which were with him;
The verse reads, “And Jesus answering them said, Have you not read so much as this, ...” Luke began with the words, “and Jesus answering them” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded and began to speak to the religious leaders” “said” which means “uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked the Pharisees, “have you not read so much as this” or “did the religious leaders distinguish between, recognize, know accurately and acknowledge by reading the following”. Luke shared how Jesus questioned the Pharisees concerning whether they had “read” the following account in the scriptures.
The verse goes on to say, “... what David did, when himself was hungry, and they which were with him;” Luke continued with the words, “what David did” which means “that which King David of Israel whose name means blessed did”, “when himself was hungry” or “at the time and moment David was craving, seeking with eager desire and wanting and needing food”, “and they which were with him” which means “and the men who were alongside David”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned the “Pharisees” concerning whether they “read” what King David did when He and the men with Him were in need of food.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus answered the question of the “religious leaders” with another question. Jesus appealed to their own “knowledge” of the scriptures when “King David” and the men with him were “hungry”. Jesus will say more about this in the next verse, but let us be mindful of the way Jesus referred to the “Holy Scriptures” to answer these “religious leaders”. God reveals Himself in the Bible, and because He desired to “save” people from their sins, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die upon the cross. God knows what is best both physically and spiritually for mankind, and those who are wise will not only learn and know the scriptures concerning Him, but also believe and trust in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells the Pharisees, “he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the showbread”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
