Jesus Praying All Night - Luke 6:12

Luke the beloved physician shared how, “it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth your hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus”, and in chapter six and verse twelve of his book Luke shares how Jesus, “went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night” where we read:

And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray,

and continued all night in prayer to God.

The verse reads, “And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, ...” Luke began with the words, “And it came to pass” or “and it happened and came into existence” “in those days” which means “within the time period of those sunrises to sunsets”, “that he went out” or “that Jesus emanated, departed and left” “into a mountain to pray” which means “to a rising or lifting above the plain to supplicate, make orations and worship God”. Luke shared how Jesus left the synagogue to go into a “mountain” place so He could “supplicate and worship” His Father God.

The verse continues,... and continued all night in prayer to God. Luke added the words, “and continued all night” which means “and spent and passed the entire night” “in prayer” or “in supplications, orations and worship” “to God” which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Luke shared how Jesus spent the “whole night” “praying” to His Father God in Heaven.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn of yet another time when Jesus separated Himself from people to “worship and talk” with His Father. Jesus took time to be alone with God, and He is a great example for us to follow in worship. God loves people, and He desires to have a relationship with them through His Son Jesus so He can fellowship with them. Those who are wise will learn the importance of separating themselves like Jesus to pray and spend time alone with God.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
