Jesus Choosing Twelve Disciples - Luke 6:13

The beloved physician Luke shared how, “it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God”, and in chapter six and verse thirteen of his book Luke shares how Jesus, “called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve” where we read:

And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples:

and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;

The verse reads, “And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples:” Luke began with the words, “And when it was day” or “and at the time and moment the daytime appeared”, “he called unto him” which means “Jesus summoned to Himself” “his disciples” or “Jesus' students, pupils and attendants”. Luke shared how Jesus “summoned” His “pupils and students” after spending the night in prayer to His Father God.

The verse goes on to say,and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles; Luke continued with the words, “and of them” which means “and from the group of disciples who came to Jesus” “he chose twelve” or “Jesus picked out, elected and selected twelve men”, “whom also he named apostles” which means “of who even so and indeed Jesus uttered, professed and mention as ones sent forth with orders, delegates and messengers”. Luke shared how Jesus “selected” twelve of the “disciples” who came to Him, and He “professed” them to be “sent out ones or delegates” as well.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn what Jesus did after spending the night in prayer. He “selected” the men who would be His “twelve disciples”, and He “named” them to be His “delegates” whom He would “send out” to proclaim the Kingdom of God. “Twelve” is the number for “human government” in the Bible, and even as there were “twelve sons of Jacob” and “twelve tribes of Israel” Jesus “elected” “twelve men” who He would intimately teach about God's Kingdom. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with all of them. Those who yield their lives to Him will find that Jesus continues to “choose” people to serve Him today, and those who are wise will allow Him to “elect” them to whatever He has in mind as well.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus called, “Simon, Andrew, James, John, Philip and Bartholomew” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
