Pharisees Questioning Again - Luke 6:2

The beloved physician Luke wrote, “And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands”, and in chapter six and verse two of his book Luke shares how, “certain of the Pharisees” asked another question of Jesus and His disciples where we read:

And certain of the Pharisees said unto them,

Why do you that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?

The verse reads,And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, ... Luke began with the words, “and certain of the Pharisees” or “and particular ones of the sect that seems to have started after the Jewish exile. In addition to Old Testament books the Pharisees recognized in oral tradition a standard of belief and life” “said unto them” which means “uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked Jesus' disciples” the following question. Luke shared how the “religious leaders” known as the Pharisees asked the disciples of Jesus another question.

The verse continues,... Why do you that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? Luke added the words, “why do you” which means “for what reason and cause were the disciples of Jesus performing” “that which is not lawful to do” or “what is not right and according to the rule” “on the sabbath days” which means “upon the seventh days of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work”? Luke shared how the scribes and Pharisees questioned “why” Jesus' disciples were practicing a “work” that was against the “law” upon the “days of rest”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “religious leaders” were observing and being critical of Jesus and His disciples again. Like “news reporters and critics”, they were on the job seeking anything they could find to bring accusations against them. This time they were critical of Jesus' disciples “rubbing grain” and eating it on the “Sabbath day”. Jesus will address their “question” that was more of a statement in the next verse, but suffice it for now to know that God knows what is best for all people both “physically and spiritually”, and He sent His Son Jesus to be one who “rescues” anyone who will submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asked the Pharisees, “Have you not read so much as this, what David did”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
