Five Loaves and Two Fishes - Luke 9:16

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus took His disciples, “and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spoke unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing. And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place. But he said unto them, Give you them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people. For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company. And they did so, and made them all sit down”, and in chapter nine and verse sixteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “took the five loaves and two fishes … and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude” where we read:

Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven,

he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

The verse reads, “Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, ... Luke began with the words, “then he took the five loaves” or “at that time Jesus lay hold of the five loaves of bread made with flour mixed with water and baked” “and the two fishes” which means “and the two fish the disciples collected”, “and looking up to heaven” or “and gazing toward the aerial heavens or sky and the region where the clouds and the tempests gather and thunder and lightning are produced”. Luke shared how Jesus “took the five loaves and two fish” in His hands and gazed toward the sky.

The verse goes on to say, “... he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.” Luke continued with the words, “he blessed them” which means “Jesus pronounced a consecrated blessing upon the five loaves and two fish”, “and brake” or “and broke them in pieces”, “and gave to the disciples” which means “and supplied and furnished the broken pieces of the five loaves and two fish to His students, pupils and attendants” “to set before the multitude” or “to place in front of the crowd of people”. Luke shared how Jesus “pronounced a blessing” upon the bread and fish, broke them in pieces and distributed the pieces to the crowd of people by way of His disciples.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn what Jesus did with the bread and fish supplied to Him. First, He looked toward “heaven”, then He “blessed” the food He was going to supply. Next He broke the fish and bread into pieces and distributed the food to the crowd by way of His “disciples”. Jesus knew what He was doing, and His plan was being unfolded before the eyes of His disciples and the multitude. Jesus meant to “feed” everyone there, and He is willing to do the same both physically and spiritually for all who yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Let all who consider the feeding of this multitude by Jesus submit their lives to the One who controls even the food they consume.

Next time Luke shares how the multitude, “did eat, and were all filled”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
