Jesus to Suffer Many Things - Luke 9:22

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus asked His disciples, “Whom say the people that I am? They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. He said unto them, But whom say you that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. And he straightly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples, “the Son of man must suffer many things” where we read:

Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

The verse reads, “Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, ... Luke began with the words, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “The Son of man” which refers to “the offspring and prodigy of mankind who was Jesus the Son of God” “must suffer many things” or “was behooved, in need and destined finally to undergo a lot of dreadful plights, sensations and impressions”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples that it was necessary for Him to endure many difficulties.

The verse goes on to say, “... and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.” Luke continued with the words, “and be rejected” which means “and be disapproved, repudiated and disallowed” “of the elders” or “by the members of the great council or Sanhedrin” “and the chief priests” which refers to “the high priests” “and scribes” or “and men who were learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings and served as interpreters and teachers. Scribes examined the more difficult and subtle questions of the law”, “and be slain” which means “and be killed, destroyed, extinguished and inflicted with mortal death”, “and be raised the third day” or “and be aroused or resurrected on the third day after His death”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples He was to be “disapproved” by the “leaders in the Sanhedrin” as well as being killed by them. Afterward He would be “resurrected” from the dead three days later.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus knew His future upon the earth. Jesus was to “suffer” for the “salvation” of mankind, and not only would it affect Him physically even unto death, but He would be “rejected” by the “religious leadership” as well. Regardless of His suffering, Jesus was to be “raised” back to life again three days after His death which is exactly what happened. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they understand how He “suffered and died” on their behalf, they demonstrate wisdom when they yield their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus told His disciples, “if any man will come after me, let him deny himself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
