The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus asked His disciples, “Whom say the people that I am? They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. He said unto them, But whom say you that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “straightly charged them … to tell no man that thing” where we read:
And he straightly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
The verse reads, “And he straightly charged them, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he” or “and Jesus” “straightly charged them” which means “admonished, chided, reproved and censured severely His Disciples”. Luke shared how Jesus “admonished” His disciples according to the following.
The verse continues, “... and commanded them to tell no man that thing;” Luke added the words, “and commanded them” which means “and ordered, instructed and declared to His disciples” “to tell no man that thing” or “speak to no person whether male or female that Jesus is the Christ”. Luke shared how Jesus ordered His disciples not to share about Him being the “Christ”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus instructed His disciples not to tell people that He is the “Christ” at this point in His ministry. Though He was and is the “Christ of God”, Jesus was to continue ministering among people without them knowing it. God has His timing for everything, and He knew the plan He had in mind for the salvation of mankind. Jesus kept God's timing for His work on earth, and those who are wise will yield their lives to Him as their “Savior” and their “Lord” who knows the best timing for all the events they encounter.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus told His disciples, “the Son of man must suffer many things”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
