Luke the beloved physician wrote, “Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press. And it was told him by certain which said, your mother and your brethren stand without, desiring to see you”, and in chapter eight and verse twenty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “my mother and brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it”where we read:
And he answered and said unto them,
My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.
The verse reads, “And he answered and said unto them, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he answered” or “and Jesus responded and began to speak” “and said unto them” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the people who came to tell Him that His mother and brother desired to see Him”. Luke shared how Jesus responded to the people who came to Him by saying the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “... My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.” Luke continued with the words “my mother” which means “Jesus' own direct female progenitor and ancestor” “and my brethren” or “and Jesus' own brothers” “are these which hear” which means “and the people who were given the faculty of hearing, perceiving and understanding” “the word of God” or “the speech, utterance, decree, mandate and order of the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “and do it” which means “and perform, produce and fulfill the word of God”. Luke shared how Jesus told the people sent to Him that people who “perceive and understand” God's “word” and “perform it” are like unto His “mother and brothers”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus desired to have a “family” of believers in the “word of God”. Though He had a physical, earthly “mother”, Mary, and “brothers”, Jesus considered every person who believes and trusts in “God's word” His family. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for the sins of the world so people might have a personal relationship with Him, and when they humble themselves, turn from their sins and yield their lives to Him, Jesus becomes their personal “Savior and Lord” who will forgive their sins and grant them “everlasting life” with His Father God.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “let us go over unto the other side of the lake”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
