Luke the beloved physician wrote concerning Jesus, “Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press. And it was told him by certain which said, your mother and your brethren stand without, desiring to see you. And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it”, and in chapter eight and verse twenty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “let us go over unto the other side of the lake”where we read:
Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples:
and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
The verse reads, “Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples:” Luke began with the words, “now it came to pass” or “moreover and it happened, came into existence and appeared” “on a certain day” which means “upon a particular sunrise to sunset”, “that he went into a ship” or “that Jesus stepped into a boat or sailing vessel” “with his disciples” which means “alongside Jesus' students, pupils and attendants”. Luke shared how Jesus was on the move again as He entered again into a “sailing vessel” along with His disciples.
The verse continues, “and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.” Luke added the words “and he said unto them” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “let us go over” or “allow and permit Jesus Himself and His disciples to pass through, travel and depart abroad” “unto the other side of the lake” which means “to the opposite side of the lake upon which the boat was set”. “And they launched forth” or “and Jesus and His disciples set sail, loosed and departed to sail across the lake”. Luke shared how Jesus directed His disciples to “set sail” toward the other side of the lake upon which they were sitting, and He and His disciples “loosed” the sailing vessel and departed.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus desired to go across the “lake” upon which the “boat” was sitting, and He directed His disciples to “set sail” for the other side. God desired to reach people all over the region where Jesus and His disciples ministered, and the next people were located across the lake from where they were. God wants all people to have a personal relationship with Him by believing and trusting in His Son Jesus, and when He gives “direction” for their lives, their best response is to “yield” to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
