The Christ of God - Luke 9:20

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus asked His disciples, “Whom say the people that I am? They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty of his book Luke shared how Jesus questioned His disciple as to who they said He was and Peter answered, “the Christ of God” where we read:

He said unto them, But whom say you that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

The verse reads, “He said unto them, But whom say you that I am? Luke began with the words, “He said unto them” or “Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked His disciples”, “but whom say you” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover who do Jesus disciples themselves utter, declare and proclaim” “that I am” or “that Jesus is”? Luke shared how Jesus continued questioning His disciples as to who they thought He was.

The verse goes on to say, “Peter answering said, The Christ of God.” Luke continued with the words, “Peter answering said” which means “Peter whose name means a little rock or stone responded and began to speak uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “The Christ of God” or “the anointed One, the Messiah and the Son of God who belongs to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciple “Peter” responded to His question by declaring Him to be “the Messiah and Son of God”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus desired to know who His disciples thought He was. “Peter” answered Him that Jesus is God's Messiah and Son. Jesus will make a statement about this in the next verse, but for now let us realize that this is the correct answer. All who wise will understand and believe in Jesus – the Christ of God, and when they do, they shall receive forgiveness for their sins and everlasting life with Him. Let all who read these words consider this question, “Is Jesus the Christ of God?”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “straightly charged them … to tell no man that thing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
