The Gadarenes Tell Jesus to Leave - Luke 8:37

The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus permitted the demons name “Legion” to leave the man they possessed and go into swine which were in the field where the man was located. Luke wrote, “Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked. When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country. Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed”, and in chapter eight and verse thirty-seven of his book Luke shared how, “the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them” where we read:

Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.

The verse reads, “Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them;” Luke began with the words, “then the whole multitude” or “at that time the large crowd of people” “of the country” which means “”who were from the territories, regions and neighboring hamlets“of the Gadarenes round about” or “belonging to the Gadarenes which means reward at the end and was also called Gergesenes, was the capital of Peraea, situated opposite the south extremity of the Lake of Gennesaret to the south-east, but at some distance from the lake on the banks of the river Hieromax” “besought him to depart from them” which means “begged, pled, desired, entreated and asked Jesus to leave and go away from the people's presence”. Luke shared how the entire crowd of people who came to see what Jesus did asked Him to “go away” from them.

The verse goes on to say, “for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.” Luke continued with the words “for they” which means “because, since and on account that the people” “were taken with great fear” or “were compressed, constrained and held fast with massive dread, terror, alarm and fright”: “and he went up” which means “and Jesus got up and stepped” “into the ship” or “in the sailing vessel or boat”, “and returned back again” which means “and turned about and came again to the area of Galilee”. Luke shared how the people were so “afraid” of Jesus they asked Him to leave them, and He got back in His boat and went back to Galilee.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we discover the reaction of the people who came to see the man who was set free by Jesus after being demon possessed. Rather than receive Jesus for the “Lord” He is, these people rejected Him and asked Him to leave. Jesus complied with their request, but they were the ones who lost because of it. Jesus makes Himself available to every person who will yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Some will accept His offer, and others will reject Him like these. Nonetheless there will be a great price to pay for not receiving the Only Begotten Son of God – Jesus.

Next time Luke shares how, “the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
