The Devil Free Man Begs Jesus - Luke 8:38

Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus permitted the demons name “Legion” to leave the man they possessed and go into swine which were in the field where the man was located. Luke wrote, “Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked. When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country. Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed. Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again”, and in chapter eight and verse thirty-eight of his book Luke shared how, “the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him” where we read:

Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him:

but Jesus sent him away, saying,

The verse reads,Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him:” Luke began with the words, “now the man out of whom the devils were departed” or “moreover the male human being from whom the demons or evil spirits left and were cast out” “besought him” which means “begged, pleaded, desired and asked Jesus” “that he might be with him” or “that he, himself, may be able to travel alongside Jesus”. Luke shared how the man from whom Jesus cast out the demons “begged” Jesus to allow Him to follow alongside of Him.

The verse continues, “but Jesus sent him away, saying,” Luke added the words “but Jesus” which means “however, nonetheless and notwithstanding Jesus who is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “sent him away” or “dismissed, bid depart and released the man”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus “dismissed” the man who was delivered from demons by saying the words spoken in our next verse.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the man who was delivered of the demons named “Legion” desired to travel alongside Jesus. He no doubt had a great appreciation for Jesus because of his healing, however, Jesus had another purpose in mind for him. God loves people, and He wants to deliver them from their sinful state and uses them in His Kingdom. Those who are wise will observe Jesus' purpose and plan for the demon possessed man who was delivered and ask the Lord Jesus to direct their lives for His pleasure as well.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells the man, “return to your own house, and show how great things God has done unto you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
