What Have I to Do with You Jesus? - Luke 8:28

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs”, and in chapter eight and verse twenty-eight of his book Luke shared how the man with devils, “cried out, and fell down before” Jesus, “and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of God most high?” where we read:

When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of God most high? I beseech you, torment me not.

The verse reads, “When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, ...” Luke began with the words, “when he saw Jesus” or “at the time and moment the man possessed with devils observed, perceived and understood that he was seeing the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”, “he cried out” which means “the man shouted aloud and screamed”, “and fell down before him” or “and prostrated himself in front of and in the presence of Jesus”, “and with a loud voice said” which means “and with a great and powerful sound and tone uttered, declared and proclaimed” the following words. Luke shared how the demon possessed man perceived who Jesus was and immediately “shouted, screamed and prostrated” himself before Jesus and “loudly” asked the following question.

The verse continues, “... What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of God most high? I beseech you, torment me not.” Luke added the words “what have I to do with you” which means “what do I, a demon possessed man, have even so and indeed of anything to do with you”, “Jesus” or “Son of God, Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”, “you Son of God” which means “you, Jesus, descendant and posterity of the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “most high” or “in the highest regions, rank and position”? “I beseech you” which means “I, the demon possessed man, beg, ask and pray to Jesus”, “torment me not” or “that Jesus not vex, torture or harass him with grievous pains”. Luke shared how the “demon possessed” man asked Jesus what business he had with Him as he identified Him as God's Son who dwelt in the “highest”, and he begged Jesus not to torture or harass him with “grievous pains”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we discover how this “demon possessed” man submitted to Jesus as soon as he understood who He was. He loudly questioned what he had to “do with” Jesus as he screamed and begged Him not to “torture” him. Jesus is more powerful than any demon, devil or evil spirit that possess and oppress people, and when someone turns to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, not only will “demons” flee, but they will beg Jesus not to “torture” them with the “grievous pains” they afflict upon others.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus had, “commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
