Jesus Commands the Unclean Spirit to Come Out - Luke 8:29

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of God most high? I beseech you, torment me not”, and in chapter eight and verse twenty-nine of his book Luke shared how Jesus had, “commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man” where we read:

(For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)

The verse reads, “(For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him:” Luke began with the words, “for he had commanded” or “because, since and on account that Jesus ordered and directed” “the unclean spirit” which means “the impure, immoral, foul and demonic essence, devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting ” “to come out of the man” or “to forsake, go forth from, emit and emanate from the male human being”. “For oftentimes” which means “because, since and on account that a lot or large amount of spaces of time” “it had caught him” or “the unclean spirit seized and lay hold of the man by force”. Luke shared parenthetically how the “evil spirit or demon” within the man was compelled by Jesus to “come out” because it “seized” him many times over again.

The verse goes on to say, “and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)” Luke continued with the words “and he was kept bound” which means “and the demon possessed man was guarded, protected and preserved safely by tying and binding him” “with chains and in fetters” or “with manacles or shackles and restraints for the feet”; “and he brake the bands” which means “and the man burst through and rent the bonds and shackles”, “and was driven of the devil” or “and was carried off, pushed and propelled by the evil spirit or demon” “into the wilderness” which means “to the solitary, lonely, desolate and uninhabited region”.) Luke shared how people attempted to “shackle” the “demon possessed man” with “chains and fetters”, but he would break them and was afterward “propelled” to the “lonely desert place” to be alone.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how this “unclean spirit” possessed this man, gave him super-human strength and drove him to a “desert wilderness” where he lived alone. Satan or the devil desires to destroy every person's life, and he would like nothing better than to drive people to “desert places” to be alone and without a relationship with God. God loves every person, and as Jesus demonstrates His power over all “evil spirits” in this man, He is able to “save” every person who yields to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Those who are wise will examine the destruction caused by the “unclean spirit” in this man, and when Jesus restores him, let all who observe submit themselves to Jesus who came to redeem and restore lives who are controlled by Satan.

Next time Luke shares how, “Jesus asked him, saying, What is your name?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
