What is Your Name? - Legion - Luke 8:30

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of God most high? I beseech you, torment me not. (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)”, and in chapter eight and verse thirty of his book Luke shared how Jesus asked the “unclean spirit”, “what is your name?” and he answered, “Legion” where we read:

And Jesus asked him, saying, What is your name?

And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.

The verse reads, “And Jesus asked him, saying, What is your name?” Luke began with the words, “and Jesus asked him” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate inquired of and questioned the man with the unclean spirit” “what is your name?” which means “by what name is the demon possessed man known”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned the “unclean spirit” within the man as to what his “name” was.

The verse continues, “And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.” Luke added the words “and he said which means “and the man with the unclean spirit uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Legion” or “a body of soldiers whose name differed at different times, and in the time of Augustus seems to have consisted of 6826 men or 6100 foot soldiers and 726 horsemen”: “because many devils” which means “since and on account that a great number of evil spirits or messengers and ministers of the devil”, “were entered into him” or “arose, came into existence and began to be within the man”. Luke shared how the man answered Jesus that his name was “Legion” because there were a multitude of “demons or evil spirits” within him.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus was not only dealing with “one evil spirit” but a “multitude of demons” that were in this man. Let us note the submission this demonic spirit had to Jesus even though there were many of them. Jesus was more powerful than the crowd of “demons”, and there are no creatures who are stronger than He. God sent His Son Jesus to the world to defeat the devil and his purposes, and when a person yields their life to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they have aligned themselves with the One who is able to defeat every foe that comes against them even when they are “evil spirits”.

Next time Luke shares how, “they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
