Luke the beloved physician wrote about Jesus, “Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth. But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm”, and in chapter eight and verse twenty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus asks His disciples, “where is your faith?” where we read:
And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commands even the winds and water, and they obey him.
The verse reads, “And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he said unto them” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “where is your faith” which means “in what place is Jesus' disciples belief with the predominate idea of trust or confidence”? “and they being afraid” or “and Jesus' disciples in a state of terror, fear and seized with alarm” “wondered” which means “marveled and admired Jesus”, “saying one to another” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming to each other” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus questioned His disciples concerning the “placement” of their faith and trust, and His disciples were filled with fear and marveled as they proclaimed the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “What manner of man is this! for he commands even the winds and water, and they obey him.” Luke continued with the words “what manner of man is this” which means “who and what kind of male human being exists here”! “for he commands” or “because, since and on account that Jesus enjoins, charges and orders” “even the winds and water” which means “also and indeed the violent agitations and tempestuous streams of air as well as the raging waters”, “and they obey him” or “and the winds and waves listen, hearken, obey and submit to Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples exclaimed the wonder and marvel of who Jesus was because even the “winds and waves” obey His “orders and commands”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus questioned where His disciples placed their “faith” as they marveled at Him and His ability to order and control the “violent winds and raging seas”. Jesus was more powerful than any of the physical onslaughts He and His disciples encountered, and because He is the Creator, “King of Kings” and “Lord of Lords”, all creation is in submission to Him. Those who are wise will not only “marvel” at Jesus, but also submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” in obedience to the One who controls “winds and waves” with His word.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus and His disciples, “arrived at the country of the Gadarenes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
