Master, Master We Perish - Luke 8:24

Luke the beloved physician wrote concerning Jesus, “Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth. But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy”, and in chapter eight and verse twenty-four of his book Luke shared how, “they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish” where we read:

And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.

The verse reads, “And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish.” Luke began with the words, “and they came to him” or “and Jesus' disciples approached and drew near to Jesus”, “and awoke him” which means “and stirred, aroused and rendered Jesus active from sleeping”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “Master, master” which means “teacher, teacher”, “we perish” or “we disciples are destroyed, rendered useless, ruined and put to death”. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples concluded they were going to “be destroyed” and “die” from their situation.

The verse continues, “Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.” Luke added the words “then he arose” which means “moreover Jesus aroused from sleep and stirred up”, “and rebuked the wind” or “and chided, reproved, censured severely, admonished and charged the violent agitation and stream of air” “and the raging of the water” which means “and the dashing and surging waves as well as the violent agitation of the sea” “and they ceased” or “and the violent wind and surging waves stopped, ceased, desisted and was restrained”, “and there was a calm” which means “and there existed tranquility and a stillness of the sea”. Luke shared how Jesus stood up and charged the wind and waves to be calm, and they did.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we discover the power within the voice of Jesus. Though the storm raged about the boat in which they were sailing, Jesus calmed it with His word. Jesus is the Creator of the world, and He spoke all things into existence. By the power of His word, He commanded the “winds and waves” to cease their agitated state, and He made all things tranquil. He is able to do the same with the “storms” people have in their lives, and when they submit themselves to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they align themselves with One who has power to calm whatever “storms” arise and appear.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks His disciples, “where is your faith?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
