The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus again asked, “Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-three of his book Luke shared how one asked Jesus, “Lord, are there few that be saved?” where we read:
Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,
The verse reads, “Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved?” Luke began with the words, “then said one unto him” or “at that time a particular and certain person uttered, declared, proclaimed and questioned Jesus”, “Lord” which means “one to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master”, “are there few” or “is there a small number or quantity of people” “that be saved” which means “who will be kept safe and rescued from danger or destruction”? Luke shared how a particular man desired to know if Jesus could tell Him if there were only a “small amount” of people who would be “rescued from danger and destruction”.
The verse continues, “And he said unto them,” Luke added the words, “and he said” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which means “to the one who asked Him as well as the people with him” the words in the next verse. Luke shared how Jesus began to respond to the man who questioned Him with the words recording in our next verse.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn of the inquisitiveness of this man who approached Jesus. His question is an important one as many wonder how many people will actually be “saved”. God's desires is for every person to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they will be “saved”. This number of people is small because most people will reject and refuse God's offer to receive “salvation” from their sins by believing and trusting in Jesus. Jesus said, “Enter you in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads unto life, and few there be that find it.” (See Matthew 7:13-14)
Next time Luke shares how Jesus said, “strive to enter in at the strait gate”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
