Like Men that Wait for Their Lord - Luke 12:36

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirty-six of his book Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples to be, “like unto men that wait for their lord” where we read:

And you yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding;

that when he comes and knocks, they may open unto him immediately.

The verse reads, “And you yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; Luke began with the words, “and you yourselves” or “and the people themselves were to be” “like unto men” which means “similar to people whether male or female” “that wait for their lord” or “who are expecting and looking for the One whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “when he will return” which means “at the time and moment the Lord comes back” “from the wedding” or “out of the marriage festival or banquet feast”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed the people listening to Him to be like “men” who are waiting for their “masters” to appear at the time they come back from the “marriage feast”.

The verse goes on to say, “that when he comes and knocks, they may open unto him immediately.” Luke continued with the words, “that when he comes” or “so at the time and moment the Lord arises and appears” “and knocks” which means “and raps upon the door”, “they may open unto him” or “the people might open up the door to the Lord” “immediately” which means “straightway and forthwith”. Luke shared how those who are waiting for their Lord will be ready to “open the door” “straightway” when He “knocks” upon it.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus wanted people listening to Him to be prepared for their “Lord's” return, and like those who awaited the appearance of the bridegroom in those days, people who were “looking for and expecting” Him would be ready to “open the door” when He “raps” upon it. God wants people to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and because Jesus promised to return to the earth after He rose from the dead (Acts 1:11), He desires them to be in expectation of His arrival. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” and obey His directive to be waiting for and expecting His return.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he comes shall find watching”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
