Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat; neither for the body, what you shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them: how much more are you better than the fowls? And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-six of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “if you then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take you thought for the rest?” where we read:
If you then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take you thought for the rest?
The verse reads, “If you then be not able to do that thing which is least, ...” Luke began with the words, “if you then” or “whether the people Jesus was speaking with therefore, wherefore and these things being so” “be not able to do that thing” which means “are incapable of performing, making and producing the item” “which is least” or “that is the smallest effort or work”. Luke shared how Jesus began to ask another question of the crowd concerning performing the “smallest” of tasks.
The verse continues, “... why take you thought for the rest?” Luke added the words, “why take you thought” or “for what reason do the people listening to Jesus take care, worry or be anxious” “for the rest” which means “because, since and on account of everything else”? Luke shared how Jesus asked the people what the reason was for their “worrying and being anxious” over everything else they needed.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus questioned the crowd again concerning “worrying” over things they needed. They were unable to perform the “least” of tasks such as adding a “cubit” to their height, and because God would care for them, there was nothing else about which they needed to be “anxious”. God loves everyone, and His desire is to “save” them from their sins so they can live with Him forever. God provides, and He wants every person to “yield” to Him and leave all their provisions in His hands.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “consider the lilies how they grow”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
