The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “Sell that you have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that fails not, where no thief approaches, neither moth corrupts. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “let your loins be girded … and lights burning” where we read:
Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;
The verse reads, “Let your loins be girded about, ...” Luke began with the words, “Let your loins” or “allow and permit the hips or procreative powers of people who were listening to Jesus to” “be girded about” which means “be fastened with garments by a girdle or belt”. Luke shared how Jesus told the people listening to Him to allow their waists to be prepared for service.
The verse continues, “... and your lights burning;” Luke added the words, “and your lights or “and the people's lamps, illuminators and candles” “burning” which means “set on or consumed with fire”. Luke shared how Jesus told the people who were listening to have their “lamps” lit.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus wanted the people listening to Him to be “prepared” for service. Men who wore “robes” in those days would “tie or gird up” their robes so they would not impede their running, and when their “lights” were lit, they would be able to see in the dark. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him, they are to prepare for service in God's Kingdom with their lives.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells His disciples to be, “like unto men that wait for their lord”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
