The beloved physician Luke wrote, “Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus told about those who, “knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us” where we read:
When once the master of the house is risen up, and has shut to the door, and you begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not who you are:
The verse reads, “When once the master of the house is risen up, and has shut to the door, and you begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “when once the master of the house” or “at the time and moment the householder or head of the family” “is risen up” which means “is aroused, raised up and erected”, “and has shut to the door” or “and closed the entrance or passage way to the vestibule”, “and you begin to stand without” which means “and those listening to Jesus are placed, made firm and established outside of the dwelling place” “and to knock at the door” or “and to rap upon the entrance and passage way to the vestibule”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus said there would be a time when the “entrance” is closed, and the people standing outside will “knock” upon the “door” to the entry and say the following words.
The verse continues, “... Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not from where you are:” Luke added words, “Lord, Lord” or “to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master which was repeated”, “open unto us” which means “open up the door to we people who are outside knocking”; “and he shall answer” or “and the master of the house will respond and begin to answer” “and say unto you” which means “and utter, declare and proclaim to those outside the door knocking”, “I know you not” or “I, the master of the house, am not aware of, do not consider and perceive” “from where you are” which means “from what place, condition, origin or source are the people outside the door knocking”. Luke shared how Jesus said people would be calling out to the “Lord” to open the door, but He will declare to them that He does not know them.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn about people who have rejected and refused to receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Because they did not make entrance into the dwelling place of God, they stand outside “knocking” on the door so the “master” of the house will let them in, but they are too late. The master, or Father God, will declare that He does not “know” them, and they shall remain separated from God for all eternity. The scriptures declare, “For he said, I have heard you in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succored you: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” (See 2 Corinthians 6:2) Lest anyone reading these words be like those people who are unknown by God and outside the door knocking with no entrance gained, let them submit their lives to Jesus and come into to God's Kingdom before the door is shut.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “then shall you begin to say, we have eaten and drunk in your presence”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
