Jesus Told that Herod Would Kill Him - Luke 13:31

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said people, “shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last”, and in chapter thirteen and verse thirty-one of his book Luke shared how “certain of the Pharisees” told Jesus, “Get out, and depart from here: for Herod will kill you” where we read:

The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get you out, and depart from here: for Herod will kill you.

The verse reads, “The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get you out, and depart from here:” Luke began with the words, “the same day” or “that selfsame and particular sunrise to sunset” “there came certain of the Pharisees” which means “there arose and appeared some particular religious leaders known as the Pharisees who were the sect that seems to have started after the Jewish exile. In addition to Old Testament books the Pharisees recognized in oral tradition a standard of belief and life”, “saying unto him” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming to Jesus”, “Get you out” which means “Jesus emanate, be expelled and cast out”, “and depart from here” or “and leave and exit from this place”. Luke shared how the “Pharisees” came to Jesus and told Him to “leave” where they were.

The verse continues, “for Herod will kill you.” Luke added the words, “for Herod” or “because, since and on account that Herod whose name means heroic and was surnamed "Antipas" and was the son of Herod the Great and Malthace, a Samaritan woman. After the death of his father he was appointed by the Romans tetrarch of Galilee and Peraea” “will kill you” which means “will abolish, destroy, eliminate and take your life from you Jesus”. Luke shared how the “Pharisees” told Jesus that “Herod” would destroy Him.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how these “Pharisees” seemed to be concerned for Jesus' well-being as they warned Him about “Herod”. They believed “Herod”, who would not be alive if it were not for Jesus, would “kill” Him if He continued to be with them. God knows the heart and mind of every person, and regardless of their thoughts about Herod killing Jesus, He could have no power at all if it were not for God. God is very loving and patient with people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Those who are wise will not attempt to “kill” Jesus like was told of Herod but will rather “yield” their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “go you, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
