Consider the Ravens - Luke 12:24

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat; neither for the body, what you shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-four of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “consider the ravens” where we read:

Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn;

and God feeds them: how much more are you better than the fowls?

The verse reads, “Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; Luke began with the words, “consider the ravens” or “perceive, observe, understand and fix one's eyes or mind upon the crows or raven birds”: “for they neither sow” which means “because, since and on account that the ravens do not scatter or plant seed” “nor reap” or “no and not in any way do the ravens harvest crops”: “which neither have storehouse” which means “that in no way hold, possess or own storage chambers or secret rooms” “nor barn” or “no and not in any way do they hold, possess or own repositories, granaries, garners or places in which anything is laid by or up”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples to “observe” the “ravens” of the air because they do not “plant, harvest or have storage places” within which to put their crops.

The verse continues, “and God feeds them: how much more are you better than the fowls?” Luke added the words, “and God” or “and the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “feeds them” which means “provides food to the ravens”: “how much more” or “to what greater degree” “are you better than the fowls” which means “are Jesus' disciples and people surpassing, excelling and of more importance than the birds”? Luke shared how Jesus told the people and His disciples how “God” provides food for the “ravens”, and He asked them if they understood they are of greater value than the “birds”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus used the example of how God “feeds” the birds who do not plant, harvest or store crops, and He asked the people listening to Him whether they knew their importance was greater than the “birds”. God loves people, and they were His greatest creation. He sent His Son Jesus to die for their sins so they would no longer be separated from Him but would be forgiven of their sins to inherit “everlasting life” with Him. Those who are wise will “consider the birds” and understand if God so cares for them, how much more will He care for those who yield their lives to Him?

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “which of you with taking thought can add to his stature”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
