Division Rather than Peace? - Luke 12:51

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!”, and in chapter twelve and verse fifty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus asked, “suppose you that I am come to give peace on earth?” where we read:

Suppose you that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:

The verse reads, “Suppose you that I am come to give peace on earth? Luke began with the words, “suppose you” or “do those listening to Jesus think, have opinions and determine” “that I am come” which means “that I, Jesus, have arisen and appeared” “to give peace” or “to grant, bestow, supply and provide calm and tranquility” “on earth” which means “upon the arable land, ground, main land, country and region”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned whether those listening to Him though He appeared to bring “calm and tranquility” on the earth.

The verse goes on to say, “I tell you, No; but rather division:” Luke continued with the words, “I tell you, no” or “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to those listening to Him, neither and in no way”; “but rather division” which means “nevertheless, notwithstanding and moreover a parting, disunion and dissension”! Luke shared how Jesus told those listening to Him that He did not come to bring “peace” but instead, “disunion and dissension”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus questioned the people listening to Him as to whether they though His purpose was to bring “peace” upon the earth, and although eventually He will bring “peace”, His role would actually cause “dissension and disunity” among people. Not everyone believes Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ and the Savior of the world, and because they believe otherwise, Jesus brings a “division” among people. Jesus will say more about this idea in our next verse, however, for now let it suffice us to know Jesus' purpose on the earth will cause the “salvation” of those people who submit their lives to Him and all others will be considered the “divided ones” on the other side.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “there shall be five in one house divided”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
