The Ground of a Certain Rich Man - Luke 12:16

The beloved physician Luke wrote concerning Jesus, “one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consists not in the abundance of the things which he possesses”, and in chapter twelve and verse sixteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus referred to, “the ground of a certain rich man” where we read:

And he spoke a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

The verse reads, “And he spoke a parable unto them, saying, ... Luke began with the words, “and he spoke a parable” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed a earthly story with a heavenly meaning” “unto them” which means “to the people listening to Him”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Luke shared how Jesus “proclaimed” an “earthly story with a heavenly meaning” to the people surrounding Him by “declaring” the following words.

The verse continues, “... The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:” Luke added the words, “the ground” or “the tract of land” “of a certain rich man” which means “pertaining to a particular wealthy male human being who was abounding in material resources” “brought forth plentifully” or “bore well and produced a fertile crop”. Luke shared how Jesus told the story of a particular wealthy “man” whose farmland produced an “abundance” of crops.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn of another “earthly story with a heavenly meaning” expounded by Jesus. This time He referred to a “wealthy man” whose “fields” produced a great harvest of crops. Jesus will say more about this in the next verses, but for now let it suffice that Jesus was telling the story about a “temporary” field possessed by the man. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person that is “eternal”, and because there is “only one life, so soon it shall pass, and only what's done for Christ will last”, those who submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will inherit “everlasting life” with Him that shall never end.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says the man asked, “what shall I do?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
