Five Sparrows Sold for Two Farthings - Luke 12:6

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom you shall fear: Fear him, which after he has killed has power to cast into hell; yes, I say unto you, Fear him”, and in chapter twelve and verse six of his book Luke shared how Jesus asked His disciples, “are not five sparrows sold for two farthings?” where we read:

Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

The verse reads, “Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, ... Luke began with the words, “are not five sparrows” or “are not five little birds especially of the sparrow sort” “sold for two farthings” which means “bartered or exchanged for with two coins known as assarium or assarius which were equal to the tenth part of a drachma and is worth about one penny”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the little “value” of “five sparrows” which were worth about a “penny”.

The verse goes on to say, “... and not one of them is forgotten before God?” Luke continued with the words, “and not one of them” or “and not a single sparrow among the five” “is forgotten” which means “is neglected and uncared for” “before God” or “in front of and in the presence of the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”? Luke shared how Jesus said not one of the “five sparrows” goes unnoticed and uncared for in God's presence.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus noted the “value” God puts upon the “sparrows” of the air. Though they were bought for a small price at the markets, God noted every one of them. God greatly values people, and because He desires to have a loving personal relationship with them, He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for their sins so they may live with Him forever. Many people believe themselves not to have any “value” in the world, and this saying of Jesus helps all who consider Him to answer this question, if God so “values” the small sparrows, how much more does He “value” them?

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “the very hairs of your head are all numbered”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
