The beloved physician Luke wrote, “There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose you that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?I tell you, No: but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think you that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?”, and in chapter thirteen and verse five of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “except you repent, you shall all likewise perish” where we read:
I tell you, No: but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.
The verse reads, “I tell you, No:” Luke began with the words, “I tell you” or “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to the people listening to Him”, “No” which means “not in any way or manner”. Luke shared how Jesus told the people there was “no” difference between the eighteen people upon whom the tower in Siloam fell and the remainder of the people in Jerusalem.
The verse continues, “but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.” Luke added the words, “but, except you repent” or “nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover and, unless the people informing Jesus change their minds for the better and amend with abhorrence their past sins” “you shall all likewise perish” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the people will in the same manner and likeness be destroyed, rendered useless, put to an end and ruined”. Luke shared how Jesus said every person was in need of “changing their minds and altering their ways” or else they will be “destroyed, rendered useless and ruined”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see another time Jesus emphasized the need for every person to have a “Savior”. Some people experience hardships that are much greater than others, and they are thought to be more “sinful”. The truth is “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (See Romans 3:23), and “the wages of sin is death”. (See Romans 6:23a) Jesus came to save people from those “sins”, “but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (See Romans 6:23), and those who are wise will yield themselves to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and never know what it means to “perish”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells another parable about how, “a certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
