When the South Wind Blows - Luke 12:55

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “When you see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway you say, There comes a shower; and so it is”, and in chapter twelve and verse fifty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “when you see the south wind blow, you say there will be heat” would be divided where we read:

And when you see the south wind blow, you say, There will be heat; and it comes to pass.

The verse reads, “And when you see the south wind blow, you say, There will be heat;” Luke began with the words “and when you see” or “and at the time and moment the people listening to Jesus observe, notice, discover and discern” “the south wind blow” which means “the wind blowing from the southern quarter”, “you say” or “the people utter, declare and proclaim”, “there will be heat” which means “the burning of the sun and a very hot, scorching and drying up will follow and come to pass”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the time people in the crowd listening to Him “observe” a “wind” blowing from a southern direction and they determine it will be “burning, scorching and very hot”.

The verse goes on to say, “and it comes to pass.” Luke added the words, “and it comes” or “and the scorching heat arises and appears” “to pass” which means “so it can happen, arise and appear”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the way the “burning heat” comes after the people observe a “southern wind”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus employs another weather event as He spoke of the “burning heat” which follows the “blowing of the wind” from a “Southern” direction. Jesus knew people who were listening to Him would be familiar with the “wind” blowing in from a “southern” direction, and they would prepare for it to be hot. His idea was for people to be “prepared” for His return in the same manner as they were for the different weather patterns. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. When they know Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they are able to be in a constant state of preparation not only for the weather, but also for His imminent return.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, You hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky and of the earth;”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
