The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through”, and in chapter twelve and verse forty of his book Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples, “be you therefore ready also: for the Son of man comes at an hour when you think not” where we read:
Be you therefore ready also: for the Son of man comes at an hour when you think not.
The verse reads, “Be you therefore ready also:” Luke began with the words, “be you therefore ready” or “let all the people who are listening to Jesus then, wherefore and on account of this exist and be made” “also” which means “even so and indeed prepared and made ready”. Luke shared how Jesus exhorted those listening to Him to exist “prepared” even like the “master” who knew the time of a “thief” breaking into him home.
The verse goes on to say, “for the Son of man comes at an hour when you think not.” Luke continued with the words, “for the Son of man” or “because, since and on account that the Son of man who is Jesus” “comes at an hour” which means “arises and appears at a certain and definite time and moment” “when you think not” or “that those listening to Jesus suppose, judge and determine will not be”. Luke shared how Jesus told those listening to Him that He would return at a moment when they were not expecting Him.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus compared His return to the “unexpected” time of a “thief”. Usually robbers do not let the people from whom they will be stealing know when they will arrive, and because of this, many people are surprised when they are robbed. Jesus said His return will be at an unexpected time, and since this is true, those who believe and trust in Him as their “Savior and Lord” should be in a constant state of expectancy. God loves every person, and He wants them to be prepared for Jesus' return. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Him and allow His Holy Spirit to guide and encourage them to look for His appearance at any time.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus' disciples ask Him, “Lord, are you speaking this parable unto us?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
