The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “spoke a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods”, and in chapter twelve and verse nineteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus says the man said, “Soul, you have much goods laid up for many years” where we read:
And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have much goods laid up for many years;
take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
The verse reads, “And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have much goods laid up for many years;” Luke began with the words, “and I will say” or “and the man with the great harvest shall utter, declare and proclaim” “to my soul” which means “to his own seat of the feelings, desires, affections and aversions”, “Soul” or “seat of the feelings, desires, affections, aversions”, “you have much goods” which means “you hold, own and possess a great and massive amount of useful, salutary, pleasant, joyful, happy, excellent and distinguished things” “laid up for many years” or “destined, appointed, made and laid down for a large and massive amount of years”. Luke shared how Jesus told how the man reasoned with himself that after he built his “bigger barns” that he could “say” and “determine” that he had a large amount of “belongings” to last for a great amount of years.
The verse goes on to say, “take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.” Luke added the words, “take your ease” or “allow and permit his own self to be refreshed, rest, keep quiet and have patient expectation”, “eat, drink” which means “consume, devour and imbibe”, “and be merry” or “and be gladdened, rejoice and be delighted”. Luke shared how the man decided he could now “relax, consume food, drink whatever he wanted and be “exceedingly glad”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how this man determined he could “sit back and relax”, “eat and drink” and be “happy” within his life because he had more than sufficient supplies to take care of him. Many people look for the same condition this man desired to this day, and true “rest” only comes through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. “Goods”, as abundant as they may be, are temporary and may leave at any time. People, as wealthy as they may be, may pass away at any time, and those who are wise will yield their lives, possessions and time to the Creator God and His Son Jesus Christ.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells how God declares, “you fool, this night your soul shall be required of you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
