Jesus' Adversaries Ashamed - Luke 13:17

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity. And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day. The Lord then answered him, and said, you hypocrite, does not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his donkey from the stall, and lead him away to watering? And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?”, and in chapter thirteen and verse seventeen of his book Luke shared when Jesus, “said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed” where we read:

And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed:

and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.

The verse reads, “And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed:” Luke began with the words, “and when he had said these things” or “and at the time and moment Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed His words concerning the woman being loosed for her bond”, “all his adversaries” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the people adverse, opposed and withstanding Jesus” “were ashamed” or “were confounded, dishonored and shamed”. Luke shared how the people in “opposition” to Jesus were “all confounded and dishonored” because of His words.

The verse continues, “and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.” Luke added words, “and all the people rejoiced” or “and each, every, the whole and everyone of the people within the crowd or multitude hailed and were exceedingly glad” “for all the glorious things” which means “because of each, every, the whole and everyone of the honorable, esteemed, notable and splendid acts” “that were done by him” or “that were produced, performed and by Jesus”. Luke shared how the people who were watching and listening to Jesus were “exceedingly glad” because of “all the things” Jesus did.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we can only imagine being in the crowd of people who were watching Jesus and listening to His words. When He cast the “spirit of infirmity” out of the woman and healed her bent over condition by touching her with His hands, the crowd marveled, and when He gave the convincing and convicting response to His critics, they knew He was someone special. God loves every person, and He desires to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Those who carefully examine Jesus' life and words will “rejoice” in them and yield their lives to Him as their wonderful “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares Jesus how, “unto what is the kingdom of God like?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
