The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twelve of his book Luke wrote, “when Jesus saw her, he called her to him” where we read:
And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him,
and said unto her, Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.
The verse reads, “And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, ...” Luke began with the words, “and, when Jesus” or “and at the time and moment the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “saw her” which means “observed, notice, discovered and discerned the woman”, “he called her to him” or “Jesus summoned the woman to Himself”. Luke shared how Jesus observed the “woman with the spirit of infirmity” and summoned her to Himself.
The verse goes on to say, “... and said unto her, Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” Luke continued with the words, “and said unto her” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the woman with the spirit of infirmity”, “woman” which means “female human being”, “you are loosed” or “you, woman, are freed, set free and released” “from your infirmity” which means “away and apart from the woman's lack of strength, feebleness and want of strength”. Luke shared how Jesus spoke to the woman who was “bent over” and told her she was “freed and released” from the “spirit of infirmity” which caused her “lack of strength and feebleness”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus responded to this woman who was afflicted with a “spirit of infirmity” which caused a “bent over” condition. Jesus “saw” her, and immediately “summoned” her to where He was. After she arrived, Jesus spoke to her told her she was “released” from her “spiritually” afflicted condition. God knows everything a person endures in this life, and because He desires to “save” them from their “sins”, He sent His Son Jesus to remove their “spiritual” “spirit of infirmity”. Those who put their faith and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and receive “everlasting life” with God which is the “ultimate” “release and freedom” from “spiritual infirmities” in this life.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “laid his hands on her”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
